ARAMNESS GIR LODGE - GIR NATIONAL PARK, INDIA

Aramness Gir is distinctly design-led and sophisticated, using simplicity and subtlety to convey its message and give guests a taste of authentic India within the context of comfort and luxury.

THE BRIEF

The brief was to create an outstanding jungle lodge in India showcasing the very best of Gujarat.  The client asked us to design Simple, sophisticated and unpretentious spaces give the guest an unmistakable sense of place and pared back luxury. The region of Sasan Gir is largely undiscovered and not on the traditional tourist route in India. As a result, the lodge had to stand out among the variety of luxury products on offer in other regions. Fox Browne was responsible for overall experiential master planning, interior design and hospitality.

THE INSPIRATION

When it came to the design language of Aramness Gir, authenticity and deep comfort were our guiding principles. This meant using local materials, culturally relevant design and local craftsmanship.

Honest materials such as limestone cladding, traditional stucco plaster, molded terrazzo, Indian teak, sandstone and marble inform the look and feel of our interiors. Similarly, our colour palette is drawn from the lodge’s natural context and is made up of saffron, bone and oxblood – an earthy mix which is both unpretentious and rich.

Gujarat’s iconic quotidian elements feature throughout like charpoys (day beds), fabric printing blocks, reclaimed hand-carved timber doors, vintage textiles, Gujarati dowry chests and more.

Dramatic hand carved sandstone jali screens are a traditional element of design, but, in this case, their pattern is unique to Aramness, inspired by the perforations of dried sal (teak) leaves in the surrounding forest.

THE RESULT

Aramness Gir is distinctly design-led and sophisticated, using simplicity and subtlety to convey its message and give guests a taste of authentic India within the context of comfort and luxury.

As the first boutique lodge of its kind in the region, Aramness Gir is setting the bar high with its Gujarati inspired, design-led aesthetic.

Drawing from a unique village concept, it’s loaded with local cultural references but is consciously restrained with a modern sense of sophistication.
