We showcase traditional Zanzibari construction, woven Jamvi and Makeka palm matting. The crystalline waters inspired the use of recycled glass and beaded curtains which are a feature in all the bathrooms.
THE BRIEF
This project entailed reimagining this ten-room exclusive island retreat off of the Northwest tip of Unguja Island. This is the most exclusive property on the entire East African coastline.
The brief was not to lose the original spirit and feel of the original Mnemba Club, built in the early 1990's. The bandas had to be low-key, made of natural materials only and no glass was allowed in any of the structures.
THE INSPIRATION
The inspiration behind our design is the island itself. We showcase traditional Zanzibari construction, woven Jamvi and Makeka palm matting. The crystalline waters inspired the use of recycled glass and beaded curtains which are a feature in all the bathrooms. The food concept, a celebration of the bounty of the sea, is tailored daily to guests needs and served wherever and whenever they want it.
THE RESULT
The result is a simple, rustic yet chic beach escape that feels like one’s own private island. The term "barefoot luxury" was coined on Mnemba Island.
