andBeyond - Lake Manyara Tree Lodge – Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania

The lodge has some wonderful, vintage Dodoma tribal art and features carpets and room dividers woven from banana fibre from the nearby villages of Mbulu and Mto wa Mbu.

THE BRIEF

Devastating El Nino floods in 1997 destroyed the original Maji Moto tented camp. In its place, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge was born in 2003. This lodge consists of twelve rooms and a small intimate guest area.

Nicholas Plewman Architects were tasked with designing intimate tree houses that would celebrate the dramatic Mahogany forest in which the lodge is situated. Our brief was to create simple, earthy and pared down interiors that would not compete with the natural beauty of the location.

THE INSPIRATION

We were inspired by the forest and the drama of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The lodge has some wonderful, vintage Dodoma tribal art and features carpets and room dividers woven from banana fibre from the nearby villages of Mbulu and Mto wa Mbu.

THE RESULT

The result is an award-winning and much-loved property in the andBeyond portfolio that has stood the test of time.
