Private Bush Home – Thornybush Game Reserve, South Africa

A bush home that is tactile, timeless, and deeply connected to its setting.

THE BRIEF

Fox Browne Creative, in partnership with architect Jack Alexander, was invited to reimagine an existing lodge in Thornybush Game Reserve as a modern bush home for two families to share — overlooking a waterhole where elephants and wildlife gather daily.

THE INSPIRATION

The design approach was rooted in respect for the original structure. Its distinctive circular bathrooms and turret-like forms informed many of the interiors. Clean, modern architectural elements were softened by handcrafted details and rich textures, with every space rethought to create a home that feels contemporary yet comfortable.

THE RESULT

The result is a contemporary, understated retreat designed for gathering and living together in the bush. Mogwana Lodge reflects a philosophy of family life in the bush — a home that is timeless, tactile, and deeply connected to its setting.
